The Grapevine played hosts to the Firs in the first round of the T-Bird Cup. It was a hard fought match with plenty of goals and incident. The first came in the fifth minute to Grapevine after which Firs were playing well below par. In the 25th minute Bryn Jones equalised lobbing the goalkeeper, but within a minute Grapevine were ahead again. Still battling Firs came close once or twice alas to no avail, but through some slack defensive play Firs went 3-1 down in the 40th minute. On the stroke of half time Calvin McHale was unlucky to hit the post, but with half time looming Grapevine were awarded a dubious penalty which when taken was hit wide, justice done!
In the second half Firs seemed to step up a gear with Darren Evans and Tony McGinn both coming close. With the pressure now piling on by Firs the Grapevine goalkeeper stopped a terrific shot from Bryn Jones. Firs now down to ten men due to the diabolical decision of the referee to send off Mick McGinn the team battled on and got their just rewards through Bryn Jones scoring off a well taken corner. James Haughty in the Firs goal played exceptional and stopped some fine balls, which were definitely goal bound. With seconds remaining Andy Haughty scored a cracking equalizer to take the match into extra time.
As extra time progressed Firs seemed to be the better of the two sides and for the first time in the match went ahead with an own goal from Grapevine. This lead was short lived when Grapevine equalized. To add to Firs plight Viv Philips got a Red Card for a second bookable offence. Now down to nine men the pressure took it's toll on Firs who conceded two more goals as the defence were stretched to there fullest. The game finished with Grapevine winning 6-4. The match was a well-fought game (literally), with what one could say some dodgy decisions by poor refereeing.
