This
game was to be a tester for Firs as Orton Vale at this early stage
of the season are one of the teams trying for the top spot. With the
pitch resembling a swimming pool in places the game was given the
go ahead.
Both sides played some good football with Firs just having the edge
and were justly rewarded with a fine goal in the 25th minute from
Calvin McHale. That’s how the score remained till half-time
with some good football played as conditions would allow.
With the second half barely 2 minutes old a bute of a through ball
from Tony McGinn to Bryn Jones who made no mistake with a cracking
shot. As Firs, now with a two goal lead, seemed to take control and
started playing with more confidence. Orton Vale with a rare attack
nearly pulled one back when Firs mix up saw an Orton Vale player through
with only Jim Haughty to beat, but as usual with not one but two fine
saves kept the Firs score sheet clean. More goals could have come
as Darren Evans & Bryn Jones took Orton Vale apart, and eventually
the third came from a great lob to give Bryn Jones his second. Firs
now playing with authority had the game under control with Orton Vale
never threatening the Firs goal.
With a short corner taken to Andy Lane he shot at goal which was a
lack lustre effort but as the ball rebounded back there was a second
bite of the cherrt for Andy and this time he did the business with
a fine shot to make it four for Firs.
As I already stated this was an crucial game for both teams in the
title race and Firs proved to be the better side with a final score
of 4-0 to Firs.
