Good morning fans with nothing to report from last week I am pleased to tell you that Firs, after their first defeat this season, albeit a cup match, were chomping at the bit and as expected were strong for Lanesfield Old Boys.
With Cup Fever still mounting we were hosts in the 1st round of the Skedgel cup. With the squad now back to full strength Firs started rather lethargically and within 10 minutes found themselves a goal down. Whether the hangovers were starting to clear but this point against was the wake up call they needed. A 30 yard scorcher from Bryn Jones rattled the cross bar to deny the Firs the equalizer. Lanesfield shortly later conceded a penalty in which Gary Dunseath took however he must have not recovered from his honeymoon because it went wide. (They do say it sends you blind Gary!) With constant pressure in the 30th minute Calvin McHale put the scorers level and this was the incentive Firs needed and just 10 minutes later, through a great solo run, Darren Evans made it two! Lanesfield were still in disarray when minutes later Darren Evans got a second just before half time. (Half-Time Score 3-1)
The second half was a one-way affair with Firs well in command, but a quick breakthrough saw James Haughty save a fantastic shot. Gary Dunseath, through a good run down the right flank, crossed a low ball across the goalmouth, which Darren Evans cheekily back heeled, into the net for his hat trick & free pint. (Not till after the game I hasten to add!) Firs now coasting saw Mick McGinn and a fifth. Still not to be outdone by hitting the cross bar Bryn Jones made a great solo run to open his account on the score sheet. Bryn Jones was then also instrumental in getting Calvin McHale his second goal, with another good solo run he crossed a near perfect ball to Calvin who showed no mercy giving the goalkeeper no chance! Lanesfield were by now getting a little frustrated and had several players booked for dissent and one player sent off. One must point out though it was never a dirty game it was just frustrations being pointed at the referee, Wayne Harrison, who it must be said did make a few 'odd' decisions. With the game in the closing minutes Andy Haughty, taking command, laid a through ball to Bryn Jones who made no mistake in getting his second goal. Now with Firs leading 8-1 that was how the game ended. A great game with Firs showing true dominance.
