Good morning folks after a convincing win in the cup against the Gunmakers, 7-1, we were back to the real business of the league. This week we played HUF F.C who we beat 11-0 at home and confidence was high, but with a depleted side our lads were sure the points were a formality.
Played on what can only be said was a pitch in poor condition the Firs started as usual in their inimitable style playing steadily. HUF playing kick and run which after twenty minutes payed off with them catching Firs back four square on the break leaving James Haughty no chance.
1-0 down was the awake call for Firs who within the minute were level through Calvin McHale. Firs were now playing the better of the sides and a sizzling overhead kick by Martyn Vaughn put them in the lead. The score remained at 2-1 to Firs with no more incident till the half time whistle.
Firs still pretty confident the second half goals would come. Unfortunately for HUF their goalkeeper had to be replaced through injury. This however didn’t deter their determination and kick & run style seemed to be paying off when they equalized through another breakaway against the run of play. This seemed to step HUF up a gear and Firs began to lose faith in their abilities. As stated with a depleted side the back four were not at full strength and this began to show. Then through a total shock Firs being caught square off a HUF goal kick they were again a goal down. This got Firs playing with more urgency but to no avail. They could break the HUF defences and what seemed like should have been a stroll in park was a battle of desperation. With only minutes left Firs got the break they deserved, Darren Evans caught the goalkeeper off his line to lob him from a good twenty yards to score with such clinical precision that we expect from him. With minutes left Firs tried for a winner to no avail. 3-3 was the final score with although bitterly disappointed they came away with a point. However next we play the Trysull Tigers which could decide the league which I know our lads will be in a different mode for this one and won’t let us down.
