This
game saw us play hosts to Bilston Labour Club in the second round
of the Skedgel Cup. No one could have envisaged that Firs would by
the end of the match have three players each getting a hat trick a
piece. As usual Firs made a slow start, but to be fair heavy conditions
made play a bit slow but nevertheless Firs were in control from the
start. In the 25th minute a good through ball from Tony McGinn to
Darren Evans saw him net the ball with such clinical finishing we’ve
come to expect from him. The game not two minutes after the restart
saw Bilston equalise and now with both teams settled in a good game
was in prospect. Darren Evans in the 35th minute, from a long throw
and defensive mix up pounced to strike the ball and making no mistake
put Firs two up! Within a minute from a brilliant header put Firs
further in the lead. Again from a long throw this time from Calvin
McHale slipped in to get his first. Bilston not despondent still kept
trying and broke through which looked to be a certain goal, but this
was thwarted by a cracking tackle from Gareth Morgan. Four-one was
the score at half time.
Second half under way and the firs were by now well in command of
the game, with what appeared from the touchline to be a penalty on
Bryn Jones Firs were given a free kick. Darren Evans took a swirling
free kick which Calvin McHale made no mistake by netting his second
and a minute later he was netting again to secure his hat trick. With
Bilston now hopelessly outclassed Firs conceded a corner and through
a bit of slack defensive play gave Bilston their second goal. Firs
soon recovered and from a looping shot off Darren Evans saw him get
his hat trick. With the return of Gary Dunseath from honeymoon and
injury we saw some of the old magic he possesses as he said later,
modestly (HA!), that when he came on as sub turned the game in Firs
favour (Bless him!) With Bryn Jones jokingly being told to score or
be substituted he did not need telling twice and from a long trough
ball he connected with a beautiful lob which left the goalkeeper no
chance. Not to be outdone added another just before time also gaining
a hat trick. That’s how the game finished although Bilston took
a beating both teams played in a good sporting manner and from a supporters
view it was a joy to watch. Well done lads!
